Missouri · November 3, 2026 general election · Statewide ballot measure

Amendment 8: what your vote means

Election and removal of county sheriffs. On every Missouri ballot. Official sources checked October 21, 2026.

Amendment 8 · Legislatively referred constitutional amendment (CCS HCS SS SJR 87, 2026)

Election and removal of county sheriffs

Official ballot title (quoted exactly)

Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to support law enforcement by preserving the right of citizens to elect a county sheriff, prohibiting the removal of a county sheriff except by a writ of quo warranto, and recognizing the office of sheriff as part of the administration of justice?

Official ballot title as certified by the Missouri Secretary of State (2026 Ballot Measures page).

A YES vote means:

Counties would be constitutionally required to elect a sheriff every four years, sheriffs’ duties now in statute would move into the constitution, and an elected sheriff could be removed only through a writ of quo warranto brought by the Attorney General.

A NO vote means:

The constitution would not change; current statutes on electing sheriffs to four-year terms, their duties, and removal stay in effect unless changed by law.

What it would change

  • Who is affected: county sheriffs, counties, and voters.
  • Current law: four-year elected sheriffs are already required by statute; this would place the requirement in the constitution.
  • Taxes: none stated.
  • Fiscal impact (official fiscal note summary): State and local governmental entities estimate no costs or savings.
