Data sources and licenses

• Open States / Plural (bills and legislators for most states). Open States data is in the public domain; we credit Open States on every record that uses it.
• Federal Election Commission (FEC) (federal candidates and finance totals). U.S. government data in the public domain. Federal law (52 U.S.C. § 30111(a)(4)) prohibits using individual contributor information from FEC reports to solicit contributions or for commercial purposes.
• State legislatures and state election offices (for example, the Washington and California legislatures and Secretaries of State). Public records published by those offices, used under their terms.
• U.S. Census Bureau (district boundary files). U.S. government data in the public domain.

Photos

We use only photos we have the right to show: public domain government portraits, photos candidates submitted to official state Voters’ Guides, and freely licensed photos from Wikimedia Commons (shown with the author and license, as each license requires). Each photo shows a credit naming its source, and rights stay with the photographer or that source. Candidates can send us a photo they own and allow us to use. If you believe a photo is used in error or shows the wrong person, email us and we’ll review it promptly.

Acceptable use

• Don’t use the site in a way that harms it or other visitors: no automated scraping or bulk downloading that degrades the service, no attempts to bypass security or rate limits, and no signing up other people for alerts without their permission.
• Light, polite automated access is fine. For bulk data, please use the original sources, which publish it directly.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, SaveYourState is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from your use of, or reliance on, the site or its information. Some places don’t allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.

Links to other sites

We link to official government and other external websites. We don’t control them and aren’t responsible for their content or availability.
