Privacy policy

Plain language, no fine print. Last updated October 29, 2026.

SaveYourState (“we”, “us”) operates SaveYourState.com. This policy explains what we collect and what we do with it.

The short version

  • You can read everything on SaveYourState without an account or giving us any information.
  • If you sign up for bill alerts, we keep your email address and the states you picked, and we use them only to send you those alerts.
  • We never sell, rent, or share your information. No ads, no tracking pixels, no analytics cookies, no political or campaign messages. Alerts may include one short line asking for support of this free site.
  • You can change your states, unsubscribe, or delete your data at any time.

What we collect when you sign up

  • Your email address, and your first name if you choose to give it (used only in the greeting).
  • The states you picked, how often you want alerts, and whether you also want major status changes.
  • Proof of your consent: the sentence you agreed to, the date and time, and a one-way scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address, kept only to stop abuse.
  • A log of which alerts we sent you and when. We don’t track whether you open emails or click links.

The signup form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to keep bots out; Cloudflare uses it to check for automated traffic, not for advertising.

If you rate the website

We may ask once how you’d rate SaveYourState, from 1 to 5 stars. Answering is optional. If you do, we keep only the star rating, any comment you choose to write (up to 500 characters), the page you were on, and the date and time. We don’t keep your name, email, or IP address with a rating, and ratings are never published. To remember that we already asked, your own browser stores a small note (in local storage) that is never sent to us.

If you join the newsroom waitlist

The waitlist on For newsrooms asks for your name, your email address and your newsroom’s name. We keep only those three things (and the date), use them only to write to you about newsroom embeds, and delete them on request. The form uses Cloudflare Turnstile, like the alert signup.

If your newsroom subscribes to a paid plan

Newsroom plans are paid through PayPal. You enter your payment details on PayPal, never on SaveYourState, and we never see your card or bank details. PayPal tells us the subscription’s id, plan and status, the email address and PayPal payer id on the account, and the newsroom name you typed. We use these only to run your plan: to email your embed key, to switch the plan’s features on and off, and to write to you about your plan. We keep them while the plan exists and for our tax records, and never sell or share them. PayPal’s own privacy statement covers what PayPal collects.

Cards embedded on other websites

News sites can show SaveYourState cards (a ballot measure, a bill or a legislator) inside their stories. These cards set no cookies, run no analytics, load nothing from other companies, and are told not to pass along the address of the story they appear in.

Why we collect it

Only to confirm your signup, send the alerts you asked for, honor your choices, and prevent abuse. That’s it.

Who else sees it

Nobody, except the two services that run the site for us:

  • Cloudflare hosts the website and the alerts database.
  • Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) delivers our emails. It receives only your address and the email we’re sending.

We don’t sell or share your information with anyone else, and we’d only disclose it if the law required us to.

If SaveYourState is ever transferred to a successor organization, such as a nonprofit, subscriber information may transfer with it, and it will remain covered by this same policy.

How long we keep it

  • Signups that are never confirmed are deleted automatically after 7 days.
  • Subscriber records are kept while you’re subscribed. After you unsubscribe we keep only what we need to make sure you aren’t emailed again, unless you ask us to delete it.
  • The log of emails sent is deleted after 12 months.
  • Abuse-prevention counters (hashed IP and email, per hour) are deleted after 2 days.
  • Server logs kept by Cloudflare for troubleshooting are deleted automatically within 7 days. Email addresses in them are masked (for example, j***@example.com).

How to unsubscribe or delete your data

  • Unsubscribe: click “Unsubscribe” at the bottom of any alert. It works in one click and takes effect right away.
  • Change your states: click “Change my states” in any alert.
  • Delete everything: use “Delete my data” on that same page, or email us and we’ll do it for you. This removes your subscriber record and your email log immediately.
