Amendment 8: Election and removal of county sheriffs
On the ballot: November 3, 2026 Legislatively referred constitutional amendment (CCS HCS SS SJR 87, 2026)
A YES vote means
Counties would be constitutionally required to elect a sheriff every four years, sheriffs’ duties now in statute would move into the constitution, and an elected sheriff could be removed only through a writ of quo warranto brought by the Attorney General.
A NO vote means
The constitution would not change; current statutes on electing sheriffs to four-year terms, their duties, and removal stay in effect unless changed by law.
