Additional property tax exemption for seniors

Official ballot title (quoted exactly)

Do you support an amendment to authorize parishes and municipalities to extend an additional property tax exemption for property subject to the homestead exemption that is owned and occupied by a person who is at least sixty-five years of age and who qualifies for the special assessment level? (Effective January 1, 2028) (Adds Article VII, Section 21(P))

Ballot proposition as printed in the Louisiana Secretary of State’s list of 2026 proposed constitutional amendments.

A YES vote means:

Parishes and municipalities could offer an extra property tax exemption on homesteads owned and occupied by people 65 or older who qualify for the special assessment level, if local voters approve it.

A NO vote means:

The constitution would not change.

What it would change

  • Who is affected: homeowners 65 and older who qualify for the special assessment level, and local taxing authorities.
  • Amount (from the Act): an additional $6,000 to $30,000 of assessed value exempt, rising with age from 65 to 81 and older; surviving spouses may qualify.
  • Local revenue: any lost tax revenue must be absorbed by the taxing authority, not shifted to other taxpayers.
  • Fiscal impact: No official fiscal impact statement is included with the ballot proposition in the Secretary of State’s list of proposed amendments.
